CLLA's 80th Chicago/Spring Meeting Hits A Homerun!
CLLA Staff | Staff
The 80th Chicago/Spring Meeting, led by Rick Thomas (President), Annette Waggoner (Midwest Region Chair) and Leonard Abrams (Midwest Region Arrangements Chair) was a fantastic four days of education, networking and fun!
The first day featured the complex litigation program, which focused on electronic discovery, the Internet and the law. The program was the second of its kind at a CLLA meeting -- and the attendance was outstanding. Later that afternoon, Chicago-area judges and bankruptcy experts led a panel discussion, “How to Avoid Ethical and Sanctionable Traps in Bankruptcy,” during the ethics program, which received accolades from attendees. Other highly rated programs included the “Hot and Emerging Bankruptcy Issues” session, lead by bankruptcy expert and practitioner Ron Peterson, “Simplifying the Complexities of UCC Article 9” with Professor William Henning and the retail collections program, “How Law Firms Comply with the FDCPA.”
The “Recruit Your Best Attorneys/Agencies” draft day event and the Triadic Chef event allowed attendees to network, get to know new acquaintances and spend time with old friends. On Saturday evening, 2010-2011 President Gary Weiner, the Board of Governors and Midwestern Region Chair Brenda Majewski were sworn in at the 80th Anniversary Celebration banquet. The new members of the Board of Governors are:

CLLA Submits Letters to Senator Durbin and Representative Conyers
CLLA Staff | Staff
CLLA’s Bankruptcy Section’s Legislative Committee, lead by Peter Califano of Cooper, White & Cooper in San Francisco, recently submitted letters to Senator Dick Durbin and Representative John Conyers objecting to new bankruptcy legislation recently introduced titled, "The Protecting Employees and Retirees in Business Bankruptcy Act of 2010" (S. 3033 and H.R. 4677). Essentially, the legislation provides a new and larger priority claim for employees for wage and retirement claims (up to $40,000 total), restrictions on insider payments and other requirements for confirmation. The CLLA opposes the legislation as unnecessary and believes that it would have a detrimental impact on unsecured creditors and Chapter 11 practice.
