New Bill Outlines Debt Collection Voicemail Rules

David Goch, Washington Legislative Counsel | May 22, 2012

On May 17, Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) introduced H.R. 5794, a bill to amend the FDCPA to exempt a debt collector from liability when leaving certain debt-related voicemail messages for a consumer.

The bill states that a collector will be exempt -- as long as the debt collector follows regulations prescribed by the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection regarding the appropriate way to leave a message about consumer debt.

The bill was referred to the House Committee on Financial Services.
